Choi worked as a mentor for Jay Y. Lee’s and helped him to take over his father who was incapacitated by a heart attack in 2014.Under Choi guidance Lee started reaching the top and helped him restructuring of the conglomerate to cement the Lee family’s control. That plan also included a controversial $8 billion merger of two Samsung units that has been central to prosecutors case against the group and Lee. Prosecutors have accused the Samsung of paying bribe totaling 43 billion won ($37.74 million) to organizations linked to South Korean President Park Geun-Hye’s friend.
As a head of the clock tower, Chio said that he has chosen the greater responsibility than Lee and the decisions he made over matters related to the scandal were inevitable the decisions he took is for protecting the Samsung from political pressure.
On a court, during the trial, Choi said that “If you were to hold Samsung responsible, please blame me. I am aging and lost judgment … Others just trusted me and followed my judgment,”.
